Celebrating Our History: The Statewide Teacher Walkout of 1968
In 1968, teachers and other school personnel went on strike to protest low pay and benefits as well as a large surge in student enrollment with very little funding approved for hiring additional personnel and building new schools. After then-governor Claude Kirk vetoed legislation which would have increased school funding, teachers and school personnel were left with few options for getting their message heard.
USEP is proud that Jim Geiger, past-president of Pasco County Teachers’ Association, was leading the way for the future United School Employees of Pasco. This is what the teachers of yesterday were willing to do for their students and those who would come behind them in the profession. What will we do for those who are to follow us?
